Protestant Committee on Scouting

January 22, 2008

Calvary Lutheran Church

Attending:  Steve Walton, Chairman; Cindy Cone, Hostess; Bob Whitaker, Verlee Gilkerson, Tom Carlisle, Jon Voss, Russ Munyan, Warren Vosler, Dave Engle.

The meeting was called to order by Steve at 7:36PM, Cindy opened with prayer.

Bob said that Elbert Cole’s son had passed away.  Mr. Cole was on the first sitting of the Protestant Committee.

Steve said he and Warren had met with Steve Roberts of the Scout Office to discuss our trust accounts.  The trust has been straightened out, we now ave our own, the Ruskin Heights Church Chaplains’ Fund, with a total of about $14,000.00.  Steve has asked Dewey Barr for a maximum withdrawal, about $603.00.  Russ asked if the Munyan funds were located, which had been donated to the Council in memory of his father in 2004 and directed by his family to that fund; he was told they are now accounted for.  Steve said the Chapel Fund is now about $55,000.00.  Mr. Degenfelder and Mr. Kennedy will watch for future needs.  We will keep a needs list for future withdrawals. Requests will go to the Property Committee.   Russ asked that we consider items for this list in September so they can be ready to present when needed. Russ thanked Steve and Warren for their efforts.

Warren passed out the financial reports. Warren said the $600 is in from endowments.  Cindy’s time has not been billed yet.  There is $1400 in excess funds transferred from the God and Country Program transferred to PCoS.  The only expenses are $500 for copies of the Book of John, and $450 for scholarships.  Steve said the current balance is $4300, it would be about $6000 if we do not pay Cindy.

Leathers Program:  Steve asked for expected expenses for HRB and TN by next meeting.  More beads, fewer leathers are anticipated, also printing on red and purple books.  We will continue to provide carabineers, but no gimp.  Russ passed out a proposed new edition of the Blue Leather Study Guide, it is marked for a shorter version of the program segment that can be used at Naish and Rotary Camps.

We have made two $50.00 payments to Catholic Committee for Rotary Camp; one for last year, one for this year.

Cindy passed out the tentative roster of Chaplains; there are 7 new ones.  She said that HRB is down 800 kids for summer, due to money problems.

Training:  Dates are March 21st and April 18th for the designated chaplains.  National Camp School will be at S-bar-F near St. Louis, there was brief discussion of who would go.

Russ said TN has a new director, Warren Wenner.  The setups for chaplains are not yet determined.  There are two sessions of Scout Camp, Verlee will be chaplain for one. There is a chaplain aide training program in St. Joseph that we may try to acquire for our use.  There will be no changes to the Webelos sessions, but more staff are needed at Naish to fully serve.

Emblems Program:  Cindy is starting a new class at Church of the Resurrection; she has several others going at other locations.  There are 121 youth and 58 adults in the North Star District in class, there are 50 in a class in Olathe.

Ten-Commandment Hike:  Cindy said she has met with Dr. Norman Kahn about having one in October. Verlee said the Religious Committee of the O/A now has a chair who can tell others of the event.  The second weekend seems most likely for it.

HOAC has submitted to be a Target Council for P.R.A.Y. for additional programs.

Russ asked if we have enough copies of the Gospel of John; could we use another 500 to be used at Naish. Russ moved to purchase another $500 copies for not more than $500.00. Verlee seconded and the committee approved unanimously

Next Meetings:  March 26th, King of Kings Lutheran Church, 1701 NE 96th St. and

April 30th, at Covenant Chapel, 13300 Kenneth Road (133rd and Kenneth), Leawood, KS.

Respectfully submitted,
